Never mind the enchanting sets and music, BPITC’s strength is in weaving the ominous with the innocent. Proper storytelling and I don’t even like the pig. Often overlooked due to its schmaltzy predecessor, shrewder critics (Siskel) anointed BPITC movie of the year over Shakespeare in Love and Saving Private Ryan.

Anderson’s whimsy can be seen emerging here in his debut featuring future collaborators Luke and Owen Wilson, who plan elaborate heists to find a sense of direction and confidence in their lives. Despite having a slightly underdeveloped appearance, it feels lighter and more agile than Anderson’s later, more famous work.

Steven Segal plays a larger than life Steven Segal. The ageing action hero is under siege from his expanding waistline. The former contender for ‘World’s Greatest Action Man’ moves less than he talks now – which is a pity – really. This bad action movie is the worst in Segal’s incredible canon – really.
